Speaking Moylanguage #7: The Social Media Edition
Political marketing, campaign experiences, social media and democracy, social media teams, staff engagement on social
Thank you for subscribing and welcome to the seventh edition of Speaking Moylanguage! This edition is particularly special for me for two reasons - and their names are Pablo Pérez Armenteros and Dominique Roch.
Pablo, Dominique and I are former colleagues. We all met while working in various parts of the EU social media ecosystem. Pablo was leading the social media sector, Dominique was the data specialist and I was working with our local offices on their social media strategies. I feel very fortunate to have learned from them as colleagues and specialists - and even more fortunate to continue to count them as good friends!
Dominique will discuss the content of a lecture she has prepared on political communication and marketing. Pablo will share some reflections on a campaign he prepared recently - something characteristically creative, fun and a little offbeat.
A quick overview for the uninitiated:
The newsletter is divided into three sections - stories, ideas and skills.
The content is mostly shared in Google Doc format, with comments enabled.
Please leave comments, share more content, elaborate and ask questions - I do reply, read and appreciate them!

1. Stories
Marketing Vs Political Communication
Dominique Roch is a political communication and marketing expert with years of experience in agencies and businesses, the public sector, political campaigns and groups, and the media. This interesting blend of communication experience puts her at the meeting point of several disciplines - and has allowed her to draw comparisons in her lectures and research. Below, Dominique has adapted the content of one of her lectures comparing marketing to political communication.
Reflections on a Creative Social Media Campaign
Pablo Pérez Armenteros is a digital, political, corporate and strategic communication advisor. Formerly a journalist and social media specialist, he now develops multilingual, multichannel and multimedia campaigns and communications strategies for organisations across Europe. With a decade of experience designing social media strategies under his belt, he has kindly agreed to share some reflections on his latest campaign.
2. Ideas
Social Media and Democracy
In October 2020, the Joint Research Centre released a JRC Science for Policy Report on the influence online technologies have on political behaviour and decision-making. This report has identified four “pressure points” (i.e. threats that social media platforms pose to our democracy) in the scientific literature. Below are some notes on these pressure points.
Social Media and Politics Podcast
I recently had the pleasure of joining Michael Bossetta of the Social Media and Politics Podcast to share some personal reflections on my time working in and around EU communication. We covered a lot of ground - from challenges and opportunities emerging from social media for the EU to comparing it to speechwriting and other communication skills.
3. Skills
Roles on a Social Media Team
I always thought that the role of Social Media Manager was too ambitious in its scope. To run good social media is a multimedia, multimodal, multiskilled operation - involving everything from researching latest trends and data analysis, to writing sharp copy and complementing it with attractive visual content. Luckily these days organisations are investing more resources and sometimes even building complete social media teams. In this piece I discuss some of the roles on a social media team and their focus areas.
Involving Colleagues and Staff in Social Media
Social media are networks made up of people. Your organisation is a network made up of people on social media. Inspiring, engaging and firing up your staff to advocate on your behalf through social media is one of the most effective things you can do. Here I discuss some methods and considerations in doing that.
